It was arduous, but rewarding to go into each pledge class and learn about the history of Beta. I knew once I started learning about the mission, goals, and vision that this fraternity was the right choice for me.

Enzo Milano '14
When I first started my pledge process I was very excited for the road to become a Beta. When I joined Beta, I joined for the men involved in it and the way I saw Beta and the potential importance it had to me in the long run. The pledge retreat was great. I was so glad to get to know the other members of the class as well as a few of the actives on a deeper level. It was nice to see how we related to each other and how we can potentially help each other in the future.

Jon McCandless '14
I have developed deeper bonds with the other brothers that will last a lifetime. During recruitment, I liked the guys of Beta, and felt a strong connection. One of the main reasons is due to the fact that we share common goals and beliefs, which provides strength and unity of our group. I love Beta Theta Pi even more now after going through the pledge process.

Bence Toth '14
I had stumbled upon an outstanding group of men who shared my own beliefs of being a gentleman, leader, and a scholar. As with anything new and unfamiliar, the beginning was a bit rocky and interesting. It sort of seemed to me that it was going to take a lot for this group of 9 young men to come together as brothers. In reality, when I look back on it, it did not take much at all. The group just instantly started to gel. All in all, I often think about how my time as a freshman in my first semester at John Carroll would be different and I know one thing for sure - I would not be who I am today had I not pledged Beta.

Nick Fill '14
When I began to learn the values and history of Beta Theta Pi in pledge class, I was excited, impressed, and drawn in to such an amazing organization. I was fortunate enough to attend the Installation Weekend and this clearly showed me how impressive this organization is. My eyes became opened to the hard work, dedication, and initiative of the members, and this inspired me to take pride in such an organization. Beta has taught me what it means to be a man of principle by not only teaching the values of such a man, but by showing examples through the current members. I am so proud to call myself a new member of Beta Theta Pi and I am excited to embrace myself with all the fraternity has to offer, from brotherhood to serving others.

Mike Moccia '14
The pledge experience for Beta Theta Pi has been an experience that I will never forget. It is an awesome feeling to know that there are people in this world that care for you, and it is also just as rewarding to have people to care about. I am proud to be involved with a group as elite as this one, and I'm proud to call every member of Beta Theta Pi my brother.

Steve Frabotta '11
I am very pleased with my experience thus far within Beta Theta Pi. Although my situation is different than the other Zeta Class members being a senior and having only one semester to look forward to as an active, I know I would not have gotten to know my fellow Zeta Class members as well without pledge classes, retreats, dinners, etc. to not only get us togteher, but also to get to know each other a little better each time.

Joel Baker '14
It was really nice to learn that one of the biggest things about this fraternity is the leadership skills that are pushed by the different leadership opportunities. This really excites me because I feel that I need some help in developing my leadership skills and this fraternity is the perfect place to do it. The different experiences and brothers have really made me realize that these guys are my brothers and that they are here for me and I am there for them.

Troy Murphy '14
The past eight weeks have been rewarding and great bonding experiences with the Zeta Class and all members. I see Beta as more of a family because we can keep each other on the right track, help a brother in need, and praise a brother when he accomplishes a goal. I know that Beta will continue being the most positive influence I have at school and continue to be in the future.

A Powerful Experience

Editor's Note: One week ago today, the Zeta Class was initiated in the Hall of Chapters in Oxford, Ohio, becoming the newest brothers of the Eta Epsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Pi. Two initiates reflect on the experience.

"Being initiated into Beta Theta Pi was one of the best days that I have had throughout my time at John Carroll University. This initiation brought all eight weeks of the pledge process together with everything I have learned. From pledge class and retreat to different service events with the brothers, I feel extremely lucky to say that my pledge process was an incredible experience. It was very eye-opening to see the dedication that all active members put into this Initiation ritual. It really put into perspective the history and values of Beta Theta Pi. Over 150 years of Beta Theta Pi's sacred principles speaks wonders for its success. I can't wait to make the most out of my time as a Beta member, and I look forward to influencing future pledges as these active members have done for me."

-Reflection by Kenneth M. We all met in the atrium and got into our cars and were off to Oxford for Initiation. The nine of us neophytes were excited to take our membership one step further to becoming brothers of the Eta Epsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Pi.

Going to Initiation and seeing how much dedication the brothers had put in to our day reassured me that I picked the right fraternity. Each of them displayed the qualities and values a Beta will always possess. I came in to college a bit apprehensive about joining a fraternity. As soon as I found Beta, we clicked. I have found my best friends for the rest of my life and I know they will do anything for me as I would for them. Being initiated was a powerful experience and I know that the bonds and growth of myself in Beta Theta Pi will only become stronger and my brothers will teach me how to be the best man I can be."

-Reflection by Troy S. The brisk cold of the early morning sent chills down my spine, and the darkness screened my vision. Time began to slow. I could feel the pulsing of the blood in my veins in the still of the morning, awaiting the inevitable seven-hour drive. Yet we knew of what was to come; we knew time would compensate for itself so soon - as soon as we reached the "capitol" of capitals, the home to true and passionate leadership - Washington, D.C. Yes, it was time for the General Convention - for the 171st General Convention of Beta Theta Pi!

As we crossed the Arlington Memorial Bridge, seeing the imposing size of the Pentagon to our right and the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial in the distance beyond it, we saw the potential in the upcoming days and were prepared to seize this incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - because for our colony, this weekend was truly a pivotal moment. A charter was in sight, a further identity was obtainable, and the men to achieve this were there and, simply put, ready!

With sixteen brothers in attendance, we felt dominant all weekend. We were being recognized with a handful of awards, having brothers speak in front of the whole convention, and showing our strength in numbers we made sure to plant ourselves in Leadership College tracks in order to bring back as much advice as we could from brothers of similar and even different demographics - brothers who cared so much for our colony even though we had never met before. And while we had so much of a presence as the newest chartered chapter of Eta Epsilon, we made sure to maximize the experience: to meet as many new brothers as possible, to make effective proposals to the Board of Trustees for adjustments and innovations on ritual obligations and stronger application of recruitment programming, and to just soak in the rich history and architecture of a city one can never visit enough!

The weekend was truly a pinnacle of brotherhood bonding and leadership development. With numbers in the high hundreds, Leadership College was most effective as facilitators taught us time-tested skills that can be applied back in our individual chapters, colleges, and futures beyond. With inspirational words from Beta senators, astronauts, and journalists coupled with motivational music videos and one-on-ones from members of the Board, the 171st General Convention fostered a stronger, confident, and more understanding leader within me, with ever more friendships and awesome experiences with my brothers of Beta.

So when I say "imagine," know it CAN be a reality!

Reflection by Christopher D. One advisor reflects on this momentous occasion.

How sweet it was! The 171st General Convention of Beta Theta Pi held in Arlington, Virginia August 5-8, 2010 was a most memorable occasion for all John Carroll Betas and advisors. 21 actives, alumni, and advisors attended this exciting event and helped celebrate the chartering of the Eta Epsilon Chapter...that's right...Chapter - not Colony.

The chapter's presentation team of Andy Lane, Nathan Catalano, J.J. Kuczynski, and Kyle Sobh was outstanding in its early morning presentation to the Charters Subcommittee. I have attended many of these chartering review sessions over the years and there have been none better. Not only did the committee give swift approval of its recommendation for chartering but the convention delegates also acted quickly without anyone raising any objections. Putting it in perspective, this was not the case with any of the other three colonies applying for charters this year. So...three years since October 1, 2007 to August 6, 2010 boiled down to three hours from presentation to chartering to a hearty welcome ("There's a Scene Where Brothers Greet...") into the convention legislative halls of Beta Theta Pi.

What may have seemed like an eternity - 3 years - was well worth it for all John Carroll Betas who worked hard to achieve this ultimate goal. And for those who worked on the Chartering Petition, it was a knockout.

But there is more! An hour or so later, the Awards Luncheon was held and Eta Epsilon received 6 awards which was great recognition for the newest chapter of Beta Theta Pi. J.J. and Andy were the featured speakers and their presentations were excellent. The "Reserved JOHN CARROLL" table signs told the story - no other chapter had that.

All in all, Eta Epsilon was the talk of convention. And why not?!?

I have worked with several chapters over the years and - without a doubt - Eta Epsilon has been the most rewarding. There is excellent rapport with advisors, a great deal of enthusiasm, outstanding undergraduates, and a desire to "just do it" and be the best.

The goal now is to keep the momentum going. This is just the beginning. Many opportunities exist for Eta Epsilon to shine in 2010-2011 - Chapter installation, Sisson Award, Knox Award, housing - as well as campus and community activities along with high academic achievement which are now part of Eta Epsilon's profile.

Congratulations to the entire chapter!

Reflection by Joe Chinnici, Ohio State '64

Eta Epsilon Financial Advisor

On Top of the World

Editor's Note: J.J. Kuczynski was one of ten Betas in the Class of 2010 to graduate on the Quad at John Carroll University on Sunday, May 23, 2010. He was selected after a competitive process to be the Millor Orator, the only student given the opportunity to speak during the ceremony. J.J., also a former colony president, reflects one month later about his experience at the 2010 Commencement Exercises.

From start to finish, the day of Commencement was one of the greatest days of my life. It all began when I had the honor of meeting Tom Brokaw. I really didn't expect more than a handshake and possibly a picture, but he was kind enough to share with me a few stories and some encouraging words to help me prepare for my speech. Then, I picked up my seating card and met up with the greatest guys I know to take the traditional Beta senior picture in front of the Ignatius statue. It was a bittersweet moment because, although it was awesome to have all of the seniors together, there is no telling when that will happen again.

Sitting through the practice ceremony was nothing special, but processing out of the gym to the quad was. At that moment, everything became real. With the sun shining and the quad swarmed with people, I was hit with a rush of excitement. While sitting in my seat during the opening of the ceremony, I was anticipating that my excitement would turn into nervous energy as my time to speak drew near. Much to my surprise, my excitement became complete confidence. As I was introduced and walked to the podium, I was quite relieved that the big moment had finally come. It had been months in the making! Looking out at the never-ending crowd, I couldn't help but smile. It was the single proudest moment of my life. Not only was I representing my school and graduating class, but I was also representing my family, friends, and fraternity.

After nailing my speech and receiving my degree, I realized that, for the first time, the most important people in my life were all in the same place together. This included my entire family, my incredible girlfriend, and my friends for life. I really lived that day on top of the world and I am determined to feel that way again in the future.

Reflection by John J. They say that letters are for a lifetime and I couldn't agree more especially after these past three weeks. On May 7th, the colony celebrated the achievements of my fellow senior members over a BBQ at the home of our Colony Counselor, Ric Eickhoff. We all had a great time playing cornhole and Frisbee and enjoyed plenty of delicious food. Following the games and meal, the entire active brotherhood and initiated advisors took part in the Senior Send-Off ceremony which triggered many emotions; it was a great way for the seniors to lend a farewell to their fellow brothers and leave them each with a personal message or lifelong advice. The final stanzas of the Bridge Builder poem were revealed to each of us as a nice way to tie our Beta experience together and exemplify the lifelong nature of this organization. After taking some senior pictures, the group assembled to be surprised by a 45-minute long picture video that showcased each of us seniors and our lives from birth to present. It was absolutely amazing; myself and the other seniors are grateful to have this lifelong memoir.

As finals finished up, 8 of the 10 Beta seniors ventured to Put-In-Bay, an island in Lake Erie where we spent the weekend celebrating and enjoying the completion of our collegiate undergraduate careers here at Carroll, with about 2/3 of the graduating class. We spent the weekend in our privately-rented chalet and toured the island via golf cart and mopeds. We all had a fantastic time and made memories that will last forever. Following Put-In-Bay, many of the other seniors and I took part in other Senior Week activities that the University sponsored for the graduating class. We attended Casino Night, sponsored by Alumni Relations, and many of the brothers took home some great prizes. The Senior Celebration on the Goodtime III was an awesome evening dinner cruise that toured the Cuyahoga River and ventured out into Lake Erie where we continued to dance under the stars. As Brother Bradish constantly reminded us, "You can't have a bad time on the Goodtime!" Friday evening, we made our way downtown to the Indians vs. Reds game as we patiently awaited the arrival of our parents Saturday morning. Andrew Kolupski, Jeff Bradish, and I hosted our families, friends, brothers, and neighbors to a delicious BBQ Saturday afternoon at our home prior to the Baccalaureate Mass at Gesu. The Mass was absolutely stunning, from the congregation to the flowers, and even the specially-composed recessional hymn by Brother Ehrbar. Later that evening we relived our college night scene with our parents in Coventry, only to be greeted by the alarm clock after only about 4 hours of sleep Sunday morning for Commencement on the Quad!

As I mentioned before, the letters we wear truly are for a lifetime. Although they each have their own hidden meaning, they mean so much more to each and every one of us. The memories we've made over the past 3 years and especially in the past 3 weeks have only added to their individual value and meaning to each of us.

On behalf of the graduating Senior Class, I would like to thank all of the brothers for an amazing experience!

Reflection by Kyle M. This year's Senior Send-Off took place on May 7, 2010.

Senior Send-Off...an event that is long anticipated and yet at the same time, dreaded. As has been done since the beginning of our colony's existence, the Senior Send-Off took place at [chapter counselor] Ric's beautiful residence. As always, the food was bountiful and delectable, and there was a great turnout of active brothers and advisors.

As we formed the circle in the woods and the ceremony began, I couldn't help but remember past Senior Send-Offs. I remembered brothers who had graduated and moved on with their lives to different places around the world, and realized that many of us seniors may be doing the same in the months ahead. I was so captivated in thought that when it came my turn to speak I realized that I had not thought of anything to say. Fortunately, I think it was for the best because I was able to speak from my heart rather than ramble off some well-rehearsed piece that I had previously prepared. I was filled with immense pride as I gazed outward from the center of the circle at the quality men who together make up Beta Theta Pi. I realized then that although many of us Founding Fathers would be graduating, that the John Carroll Colony of Beta Theta Pi is in good hands and that the future of the colony is bright.

Reflection by Kurt M. Basel, Switzerland. Berlin. Madrid. Paris. Rome. And oh yeah, London. That's where I studied abroad this past semester with around 25 other students from JCU's Boler School of Business. From January to May, London's west side, in all of its cultural and overcast beauty, along with Regent's Royal Park, where our college was located, was home.

This trip did more for me, however, than just give me a chance to see many different countries. I got to know some JCU people a lot better and meet some really neat people in the various hostels I stayed in and right at Regent's College. Regent's was home to not only British folks, but students from other American schools and students and lecturers from other cities like Cairo and Cyprus, just to name a few.

As far as a place to study, I am happy with having chosen London. I feel the transition from America was easier since we were in an English-speaking country. However, I did not have difficulty communicating in any of the places I visited. There were really nice and helpful people in all of the countries I visited - including France, contrary to the popular stereotype. All in all, I met more Europeans (Britons included) who spoke English and other languages than Americans who spoke the languages of other countries. The next time I travel, all I would change is being able to communicate - at least a little bit - in the native language of the country I visit.

My experiences abroad well surpassed my expectations. The best things always seemed to happen randomly and out of situations that you could not make up if you tried. Take, for instance, our getting stuck in Berlin for a week because of the Icelandic volcano. We got to see so many more historical sites, expertly explained to us by Dr. Berg (JCU history professor), than we would have been able to otherwise. And I got to see, for the first time, the John Butler Trio in concert - in Berlin!

The entire five month experience was amazing and one I will not forget. I would encourage anyone with the chance to take a semester or even a summer abroad to do so. Close your eyes. Drop your finger on the map. And book your plane ticket...or better yet, tickets.

Reflection by Ben Szweda '12

Epsilon Class Testimonials, Part II

Editor's Note: The following are excerpts from some of the Epsilon Class testimonials, reflecting on their experience as a new member of Beta Theta Pi.

Spencer German '13
Beta Theta Pi. To most people on the John Carroll campus and around the world, those three words are just the names for three Greek letters, which represent just another typical fraternity in American society with all the stereotypes that go along with it. However, to me these three words, or letters, are much, much more than what anyone can imagine.

Now I stand here today as a newly initiated member of the honored fraternity of Beta Theta Pi, and I realize already that joining was one of the greatest decisions I have ever made in my entire life. For starters, I am surrounded by wonderful, talented, and well-conducted men, who I know I can turn to for anything and everything. The word brotherhood truly comes to mind when I think of Beta. I know the brothers I have in this fraternity will exist til the day I die and knowing that means I'll always have people to have a good time and celebrate with, but at the same time those same people will take me seriously and help me in any way possible. That to me is probably the most important thing. Friendship is one of the biggest things I believe a person needs in their life and I now know I'll have that for my entire lifetime.

I could continue on and on about how this fraternity has already made a difference in my life over just these three short months. Some things I just cannot put into words...from retreat where I was able to learn so much about my fellow pledge members and had a blast, to even Greek Week where I almost completely lost my voice cheering for my fellow brothers. All of these events have left a huge mark on my life already and I know I will never forget them or my brothers. Beta Theta Pi is truly more than those misleading stereotypes and subjective views, and it takes being a part of it to realize how much it can impact a person.

Dom Iacozili '12
I can honestly say that the two best decisions of my life were transferring to John Carroll and joining Beta Theta Pi. At the start of this semester the brothers and fellow pledges were complete strangers to me but I now consider them my best friends. The pledge process has brought the seven of us closer than I could have ever imagined. The pledge retreat was a great experience to bond and get to know each other on a personal level. Most importantly, the retreat taught me how much Beta means to me, and how much I trust the brothers of Beta Theta Pi. I can honestly say that I have opened up to my pledge class and brothers of Beta more in the short amount of time that I have know them than my family and friends who I have known for years. We went into the weekend as friends but I feel we came out as brothers.

I know no matter what I have a solid foundation of friends that I can always count on and I know will always be a part of my life no matter where I end up. I am so proud of the memories we have created so far and can't wait for the many more to come.

Epsilon Class Testimonials, Part I

Editor's Note: The following are excerpts from some of the Epsilon Class testimonials, reflecting on their experience as a new member of Beta Theta Pi.

Will Murray '13
At first I didn’t want to join a fraternity, because of all the bad stereotypes, and I thought that I wouldn’t get in. After [my suitemate] got into Beta [in the fall], he kept raving about how much he liked it and all the guys. I decided to check out the informal recruitment of Beta Theta Pi. At first I was hesitant because I didn’t feel like I fit in, but then I realized that I did.

Rich Mazzola '13
My experience with Beta Theta Pi has been a great one filled with an array of new friendships and memories, and that was achieved after only a couple months. Understand that before I came here I knew about Beta and some of the people in it. But what I did not know is what Beta stood for, what they valued and set as their morals. I did not want to rush into an organization; I like to see how they are around campus and see what people think of them. The overall stereotype I received about Beta was these are the nicest, most well-kept men I will ever meet. I went to wing night to meet all the brothers. I never met so many different people with different interests, understandings, and characteristics – they all blended together so well. Talking to each brother a little bit more I realized what type of organization this is. It is one for others but at the same time sticking together which makes it fun.

Ethan Hockett '13
My experiences of being a Beta thus far have been very good. Since I have joined Beta I have made many new friends who I know will be friends for life. I have enjoyed my experience with all of the guys. The older guys have been awesome.

Enzo Miceli '12
So, I'm officially a Beta, and it feels fulfilling. Transferring into John Carroll, I never imagined joining a fraternity, nor did I think highly of them. Hearing stereotypes about what people went through just to become a member (such as being hazed), I was totally against becoming involved.

From the moment I met these men, I felt as though I belonged. The six other men I went through the process with are a great group to be around. For some reason, we all get along really well and from the beginning, felt the brotherhood bond.

Not only was joining Beta a great decision, but the pledge process was a life lesson for me. I learned that just because a stereotype exists about a group or person, doesn't mean it is necessarily true. Instead of agreeing with the stereotype and staying away, learn more about the specific group or person before making a decision for yourself.

Chris Saniuk '12
I never thought about joining a fraternity in the past, but I am extremely glad that I went to the recruitment events back in January to see what Beta was all about. It’s shocking to think about everything that has happened in the last 8 weeks, from induction to pledge class and the retreat. It seems like just yesterday I received my bid; now it’s already April and I am a roll number 53. I look forward to what Beta has to offer in the upcoming years.

One of the Greatest Feelings

Editor's Note: The seven members of the Epsilon Class were initiated into full membership on Tuesday, April 13, 2010.

When I first arrived for Initiation I was not sure exactly what was going to happen or what secrets we would learn. I knew that to that point in time I still had many of Beta's secrets to learn and that becoming a member would allow me to have access to those secrets. As I went through each part of the ceremony, I began to learn more and more about Beta and its meaning as an organization than I knew before. I am glad to have chosen to join Beta and I realize it will open me to many opportunities in college and life. The feeling after my initiation was a hard one to describe. Knowing I had the support of my new brothers and that I was now officially a part of such a great organization was one of the greatest feelings I have ever had. I was glad initiation went well and that I made it through the entire pledge journey. I now look forward to my journey as an active member!

Reflection by Spencer T. Although close, the actives did come out victorious.

Beta Jeopardy turned out to be very competitive. The Epsilon Class competed against a few of the actives (Shaheen, Jurell, and Marco). The active members may have won the battle, but they did not win the war. The game was fun and served as a great review for our final exam. It showed just how much information we covered in Pledge Class over the eight-week period. The hour we spent playing was a simple and exciting way to study, and to take a break from our normal coursework.

Reflection by Chris Saniuk '12

A Definite Eye Opener

Editor's Note: The Epsilon Class, as a bonding opportunity to display its commitment to our community, went on Labre on Friday, March 26. The Labre Project provides food and fellowship to those living on the streets of Cleveland.

I had the chance to go on Labre along with the rest of the Epsilon Class. It was an awesome time; the people we met and the homes we saw made it a definite eye opener. I have always seen the "homeless" and have given them money when I can but this was a completely different experience. I talked to and interacted with these people, and you find a new found respect for people who can manage in such harsh conditions. I think the one couple that really got me and the rest of the class to realize how much harder life is was a couple that lived out in the woods. They had a whole campsite that looked like they put a lot of work into it. The family had a tire swing for the kids, a tent, and a fire pit. The only problem was that their camp was burned down by someone a week ago. As a result, they have been living in a tent about 200 feet from their original camp. They were not home so we couldn't talk to them, but we did leave food for them at their camp. The reason it was so mind-blowing was because they have three children! The children live with their grandmother and go to visit their parents whenever they can. Could you imagine your parents being homeless? I didn't know what to say. It was an interesting experience and I am glad I had the chance to go alongside my brothers. This really gave us a chance to bond and better know one another. I would gladly go back on Labre!

Reflection by Rich Mazzola '13

Can you say AMAZING?!?

Editor's Note: The Epsilon Class of Beta Theta Pi went on a brotherhood retreat to nearby Carrollodge over the weekend of March 12-14. Throughout the course of the retreat, our new members developed their leadership skills and grew closer as a class through various bonding and trust activities.

As we got lost trying to find Carrollodge on Friday night, I could only imagine how the retreat was going to unfold. I soon learned that it was better than expected. The group activities (challenges) were no big deal for the Epsilon Class!!! We demolished all previous records. The human knot was completed in a mere 18 SECONDS! Can you say AMAZING?!?

As the retreat progressed, it was all about teamwork and listening skills. These activities challenged us on how well we worked together. For the most part, we did well - except for the last activity, the "Blind Polygon." This proved to be the most difficult because no one listened to each other, which lead to ultimate disaster.

The retreat proved to be an excellent way to fully get to know my fellow brothers, through the fun activities and with the more serious ones, like the retreat-concluding song activity. This one was my favorite, not only because everyone had a great taste in music, but because of the story behind the music. The mood behind everyone's story was sad, but with that comes the faith and brotherhood knowing that was revealed will not be repeated. The songs, I think, made everyone come closer.

Reflection by Will Murray '13

Delta Class Testimonials, Part II

Editor's Note: The following are excerpts from some of the Delta Class testimonials, reflecting on their experience as a new member of Beta Theta Pi.

John Jackson '13
Beta Theta Pi. These three Greek letters meant nothing to me 10 short weeks ago. Now, the letters mean more to me than I ever would have guessed. They stand for comfort, friendship, trust, loyalty, respect, joy, laughter, and brotherhood. The pledge experience for me was a wonderful process. All of the pledge classes, the retreat, and even hearing testimonials of other brothers. I heard stories of friendship, trust, and brotherhood from past and present members as well as alumni from different schools and generations. Everything sounded too good to be true. Everyone who spoke had different stories to tell and different experiences to share but the underlying message in all of the talks was the same: Beta Theta Pi is simply awesome, and if you let it, it can be huge positive force in your life.

I was not skeptical that the fraternity had such a profound impact on the people speaking. You could tell by how passionate they were about what they were saying. I only questioned if it would mean that much to me. I didn’t know any member of Beta that well at the time and I wondered what could create such strong bonds. I now can confidently say those bonds are created through the Beta Spirit. Intangibles are always hard to describe, and I’m sure that the idea and feeling of that Beta Spirit means something a little different to everyone. But for me it is the feeling of loyalty and that ease of friendship with our fellow brothers.

Trent Oczypok '13
After being chosen for the fraternity in which I wanted so badly I was absolutely ecstatic! I was on cloud nine! I found a group of guys here on campus that had the same goals, morals, and beliefs as me. Everyone was a gentleman, a leader, and a scholar; a man of principle. The pledge retreat came along, and I loved it. It greatly influenced the way in which I see all the new members and has allowed me to think more with an open mind. I truly love each and every one of you guys in the Delta class and I respect all that you do. We all have very different backgrounds and lifestyles but have a common goal; to be a man of principle.

I have been asked what Beta means to me, and it’s easily summed up by saying that my backbone at home is my family, but here at school it is you. If anything goes wrong, I have a fraternity of brothers that can help me. I know you would all do anything for me; in return I would do anything for you. We can laugh, cry, see eye-to-eye, or disagree, yet in the end realize that I have the best people here on this campus acting as my friends. You act as a support system and I thank you for that.

Ben Rossi '13
I was the only one from my graduating class of 600 to come to John Carroll, but that’s just how I wanted it. I wanted an adventure and I thought Beta would be the perfect guide through that adventure. These are the type of men I want to associate with. They are the leaders on campus and have a set of morals and interests that are very similar to my own. Immediately, I felt right at home. It was a really cool feeling how older dudes genuinely wanted to hang out with you. This fraternity seems to defy mostly everyone’s expectations when they get a glimpse of what really goes on and what the group truly values. Beta has already provided me with so much here at John Carroll and I’m hoping to give as much back. Something truly special is going on here. You know you haven’t joined a typical fraternity when after the Parents’ BBQ you get a random text from your mother that says, “Honey we are you so proud of you.”

Delta Class Testimonials, Part I

Editor's Note: The following are excerpts from some of the Delta Class testimonials, reflecting on their experience as a new member of Beta Theta Pi.

Jeff Bartolozzi '10
If you told me last year that I would join a fraternity in my senior year of college, I would have thought you were crazy. For me, I had already accumulated a base of friends and didn’t know what void a fraternity could fill in my life. I then met most of the members of Beta Theta Pi and realized each one, although unique in personality, shared many similar aspects of character. It was at this point that I made the decision to join this group of gentlemen in their endeavor, one that will affect and already has affected my life. From recruitment and pledge class to the retreat and initiation, there has been a transfiguration that has built a part of what I am now.

Andy Bryan-Ramón '12
I was craving to build everlasting brotherhood relationships, with similar aspirations, goals, dreams, and a privileged respect and understanding of the World today. Beta Theta Pi was the only one that recognized and distinguished my talents. Respecting and accepting me just the way I am, even in our unique ways to be. To see the commonality of our diversity is what truly distinguishes Beta from any other organization. I love the commitment to stand beside each other and I am grateful for and overwhelmed by the incredible love and support of my brothers.

Mark Ehrbar '12
You have all heard me say joining a fraternity is something I swore I would never do through my college career, but I am so happy to have found Beta. I learned that this “Beta” thing was made up of all the guys who sat in the front row of Mass in suits while I was playing [piano]. Week after week I would be extremely impressed that a group of guys consistently went to church together and sat right up front. Has this ever happened in the history of the Catholic Church? I gained respect for the group, and [once I joined] every week I found I was enjoying and appreciating the organization more and more.

Dan Imfeld '13
From recruitment to chapter meetings to class to initiation, everything has been a blast and a blur at the same time. At the beginning of the year I had little intentions of joining a fraternity but as things unfolded in the first couple of weeks of school I found myself wanting to join Beta. We began pledge classes; my favorite part for sure was talking about peg legs as much as possible. Then came the retreat, which was a great time for all of us in the Delta class to come closer and grow together. I can honestly say that I came away from that feeling like the Delta class was definitely more unified.

Ben Szweda '12
Since I made the decision [to join] I have not regretted it. The parts of Beta that I experienced have been for me more than what I thought they would be. I have gotten to serve alongside brothers who value service as much as me. I have gotten to meet more people who are like-minded and I have been able to expand my friend group to include some great people who will make me a better person. Some of these people I would never have known without Beta. I am happy to align myself with an organization that stands for what Beta stands for. I look forward to working and helping grow Beta's name on campus and in the community.

Everything I Had Imagined...and More

My experience as New Member Educator was everything I had imagined and more. I knew that I was made for the job as soon as my own Member Ed, Matt Wooters, asked us to reflect on the ways we could dedicate ourselves to leadership in the fraternity. Soon enough, I was elected. During the beginning stages it was very challenging trying to win the respect of other Betas especially since I was such a new initiate. It was challenging incorporating all the changes that I wanted but with hard work and help from my advisor, Joel Mullner, and assistant, Andrew Lane, I was able to have one of the most fulfilling years in Beta yet.

Joel and Andrew were my closest brothers during the pledge period and they had helped me to see all my visions come true. In my first semester with the Gamma class, we had all worked diligently to incorporate, for the first time ever, a brotherhood retreat for the new members, focusing on brotherhood, trust, and the Beta Spirit. The retreat was a life-changing experience for the Gamma class and also for the retreat leaders, which left me very excited for Initiation and the rest of my term.

This past fall, I had the opportunity to have our largest class yet: the Delta class. The Delta class was composed of thirteen men, all of them unique and with their own life stories. It was another new challenge trying to conduct a class with so many people but in many ways it was a test for my future career. It made me realize that I had the potential to be a teacher and that I would be good at it. Throughout the rest of the term, I experimented with many different activities and also many techniques of teaching. It was an amazing time for me to get a little taste of my future career but it was most fulfilling to see both of my classes gain such a rich and genuine appreciation for the principles and history of Beta. Being the New Member Educator has not only made me a better educator, but it has shown me that I have the capabilities to change people, to inspire, and to lead—and that’s more than I could have asked for.

Reflection by 2009 Member Educator Jurell G. You hope that he will adjust to the more difficult academic load, learn to juggle the many demands on his time, act wisely, and very importantly, make a home for himself with a strong group of friends. We’ve been very pleased with the choices Ben has made so far, and that most definitely includes joining the Betas. Having grown up without brothers, the opportunity to join this group has, I think, filled a void. He is thoroughly enjoying the friendships, the support, and the sense of brotherhood. My husband and I also enjoyed the opportunity to put faces to the many names Ben has talked about at the Barbecue. We were glad to meet such a great group of young men.

We have been impressed with the way the fraternity conducts itself. Fraternities so often are purely social organizations. From the fun Ben has, I know the Betas have their share of good times! But I also know there is more to your organization. It has been beneficial to Ben to be part of a group that is sincere and caring in their attitudes toward each other, actively involved in volunteering, and thoughtful and responsible in the way the chapter runs the organization. I think this young Beta chapter is off to a great start!

We wish you all good luck on your finals!

Debbie and Sam Rossi
Parents of Benjamin M. The event consists of John Carroll students signing up to be “buddies” with a gradeschooler from the Cleveland area for a day of fun Christmas activities. These activities include cookie decorating, face-painting, making Christmas cards and ornaments, as well as seeing Santa and receiving a gift from him. I have enjoyed my time volunteering for this event because the kids really look up to their buddies and value the attention they get from their buddies. The parents and teachers of the children also value the efforts by the JCU community to reach out in this way and provide a fun afternoon for the kids. The event has been a very rewarding way for me to do service because seeing the smiles and unending energy of the kids is special. Overall, this event is an awesome yearly service project that myself and our entire Beta colony have been involved in and we hope to continue our support of it through the years.

Reflection by Andrew R. However, this was not just any morning. This was the morning that the thirteen members of the Delta Class were to be initiated. I was down and ready at 5:15 and next thing I knew we were off to Oxford. I was expecting to get a good four hours of sleep before we got there. This did not happen though; every time I went to lie my head down on my plush pillow and began to doze, I was enticed into one of the many great conversations that took place in our car on the way down. It was great to be "stuck" in a car with three of my brothers - it really gave us a great opportunity to get to know each other a little better and to bust on Matt for having a Kia.

Once we arrived at Miami, evading cows left and right, we were all overwhelmed with the beauty that the campus and Administrative Office had. After making the A/O our home and changing room, we headed to be initiated. (The next hour or so of the day has to remain secret to protect all of those involved.) So after we were initiated, we then went to the Alpha House store and then to Pita Pit. It was extremely delicious and I would love to find one on every venture I ever go on. After that we went to the site of Old Main which was unexciting because it no longer exists. After that we went to the bell tower which was pretty cool.

Once we wrangled Chris Romeo in the car, we then were taken on a nice accidental tour of the campus by Skivs in an attempt to get gas. Finally the discovery of gas was made and the discovery of Joel correlated with this. We then asked to follow Joel home and he agreed to be of assistance. However, unbeknownst to us in Matt's car, Joel was on an evil mission to leave us behind lost with the cows. We were able to overcome two straight red lights, but we soon were left to fend for ourselves in the land common to our president, Sir JJ. Under the guidance of our pilot Skivs, we got lost and wandered the countryside for what seemed like days on end. Then we asked a friendly Subway attendant and were on our joyous way back to John Carroll University. The way back included one sweet trip to Wendy's, and we landed back about an hour or so later than most cars. Therefore, we four in that car are the most committed to the relationships with our big brothers and little brothers because we spent the most overall time with each other. Everything else that was not mentioned in this account of the day did not happen or just slipped my memory.

Reflection by Daniel J. My suit was laid out, my final exam was complete, I went to bed early, and my alarm was set...or so I thought. I planned on waking up about 4:30am to shower before we met at 5:15 sharp. The next morning my alarm went off, I got out of bed and immediately hit snooze (out of habit). Well, I found out at 5:23 that I must've missed the snooze button because Andrew Kolupski was calling my cell phone wondering where I was. I shot out of bed and was freaking out. Here it was, the morning of Initiation, and I had overslept.

I threw some pants and a shirt on, stuffed some clothes and snacks in a bag, grabbed my wallet and suit and I was out the door. I don't know what exactly was rushing through my head as I sprinted to the parking lot where the rest of the guys were waiting...something to the effect of "I can't believe this is happening...I hope Andy has some gum because I didn't brush my teeth." I ran out to the back parking lot to see cars pulling out and my car of the Andrews - Kolupski, Vogel, and Lane, all standing outside of it waving me down. I made it to the car breathing heavily and still in my morning daze. It wasn't until about an hour into the trip that I realized I had forgotten my final exam. Nonchalantly, I told Andy that I didn't have it. He decided to ask Jurell (our member educator) if it was a big deal. Jurell didn't answer and I was left to stew. With about 45 minutes left in the trip, Andy received a text from Jurell saying that he wasn't sure if the Hall of Chapters would let me be initiated. Great. Here I was 45 minutes from Oxford, psyched to get initiated but because I couldn't get out of bed on time I was going to have to miss out on the experience. I got out of the car slowly, calculating who would be the best person to talk to. I look up to see Andy and Jurell smiling and laughing in my direction. I ran up to them and called them on their bluff, but they did have me going! Thankfully I was able to be initiated even though I almost missed my ride and forgot to bring my exam.

It was a whirlwind experience for me. Apart from not being on my A-game in the morning, the rest of Initiation went smoothly. I felt privileged and honored to be informed of the secrets of our Fraternity, and what Beta truly stands for. One specific memory I'll have is when the ceremony was over and we were welcomed with cheers and congratulations from all the other actives. There was happiness, joy, friendship, and brotherhood in that room - something the founding fathers of the Fraternity I'm sure would be happy about. Overall it was a wonderful day. Thank you to Skivs and Poz for organizing everything, and a big thanks to all of the actives who made the trip down to Oxford to support the Delta Class. It meant a lot to have all of the brothers there! What a great start to my Beta years.

Reflection by John N. For me, at first, it was something I was looking forward to. Yet at the same time, I was also focused and continually thinking about my homework. It was never a thought of, "I could be doing something better with my time" but rather, "I must do my homework even though I don't want to and I don't know when I'm going to find time to if I go on this retreat." The retreat finished, I have had my expectations exceeded and am really satisfied that I chose not do homework instead of the retreat. While on the retreat, we did many bonding activities such as a personality wheel, trust lean, interlocking arms, marble pass, trust fall, and story sharing. As the retreat progressed, the activities tightened more and more the Delta class together. Some of the activities that stuck out to me were the marble pass, dinner, and story sharing. Each built a different type of bond. The marble game built a bond of teamwork, while dinner built a bond of family, and story sharing built a bond of emotion. Even though I didn't get to talk one-on-one with some of the others who I had not known much about, I still feel that everyone opened up to each other well enough so that I and everyone else can approach each other with a much greater sense of comfort than before. Thank you Jurell, Joel, Andy, and Chris for setting this up for us and thank you Beta Theta Pi Delta Class for this unique and wonderful experience.

Reflection by Jeffrey A. This year's show took place on Friday, October 2, 2009.

Carroll's Got Talent 2009 turned out to be a great success. Being only the second year the talent show has been hosted by Beta Theta Pi, I wasn't sure how it would go, but we had a large number of acts try out, and unfortunately I had the displeasure of letting some of them go; not everyone can be a star. The remaining acts, however, were a great selection, ranging from a comedian, to rappers, to piano/guitar duets, to hip-hop dance crews. The diversity in the performances made me realize just how much hidden talent John Carroll has.

The show itself had a wonderful turnout of students, JCU faculty/staff, and some supporters from the surrounding community. I would estimate there were around 250 people in attendance. There were a few minor technical difficulties at the beginning of the show (of course the intermission band didn't arrive until ten minutes before the show was supposed to start, so there was a mad rush to get their equipment in and set up before the first act went on stage). Overall it ran smoother than last year, and my favorite act would have been Kappa Alpha Theta...those girls can dance! All told, we raised close to $1,000 for the Center for Autism, which is an incredible jump from last year. This time around I want to get directly involved at the Center rather than writing them a check, so Travis Haycook - assistant director of the Center - will be hearing a lot from me, whether he likes it or not!

Reflection by Jamie A. We had a great turnout of brothers and were able to bond at all moments. From the recruitment workshops to the college football games, our bonding was incredible.

The meaning of our retreats is to build brotherhood and I know we all felt brotherhood this weekend. We all now know more about each other than we ever did previously. Sitting around the campfire that Saturday night for hours is what I truly treasure about what we do here at BETA. I can honestly say that everyone listened intently to what all had to say and some gave some great advice and food for thought so all could hear. We all gave a song that meant something to us and how we could relate it to our future in life, in BETA or in anything in particular. Many people express themselves through song but it is amazing to hear others' interpretations and how they may view a song. This is not something that is done often, especially with those who you care about and are close with. This is hands down one of my favorite activities and I truly hope that it is continued on BETA retreats for ages to come.

After this weekend I feel like I am much closer with all my brothers who I may not have known so deeply. Thanks to all who put on this experience and I look forward to the next!

Reflection by Andrew D. Participants share ideas, dissect Fraternity ritual, partake in challenging activities that focus on leadership skills, learn more about the history of Beta Theta Pi and reflect on the Fraternity’s heritage.

Only after three months of being initiated, I found myself surrounded by eighty men who I have never met before and felt completely comfortable with it. I shared one thing in common with all of them - Beta. I was fortunate to attend the Wooden Institute this summer and glad I did because it was amazing. The Wooden Institute was one of the best experiences of my life and everything was fantastic, from the small group discussions, to the large group activities. I had no expectations going into the Wooden Institute and was surprised at how much I got out of it in the end.

I quickly became friends with Betas from across the country and saw the "Beta Spirit" in each person. Only having been a brother for three months, most of it being the summer, this was one of the first times that I felt the Beta Spirit and brotherhood. Every activity at the Wooden Institute had some significant moral lesson connected to Beta. Those lessons helped the undergraduate members reflect on their own experience with Beta and share what they have learned to help the other chapters. The Wooden Institute taught us how to become even better brothers to help prepare us to become great leaders in our own chapters.

I would recommend the Wooden Institute because it is a great eye-opening experience that every new member should experience for themselves. The Wooden Institute is held at the founding place of our fraternity, which is worth the trip alone, but being there with about eighty brothers from across the United States and going through the same experience is truly remarkable.

Reflection by Brian D. There were many moments throughout the trip in which I was overwhelmed with awe at the degree of excellence of Beta Theta Pi, from the five-star facilities and the friendly company, to the delicious banquets and inspiring speakers. It is indescribable to sense the Beta Spirit radiating from over 600 people in a single room. Beta Theta Pi is an international fraternity—I knew this before attending Convention, but this trip gave me the opportunity to see and understand the immeasurable magnitude of the general fraternity and a glimpse of what it takes to function. I learned that not every Beta brother is the same. Not every Beta acts the same, or looks, dresses, or talks the same; yet all Betas are joined by the mutual bond of brotherhood. If every brother was alike, the fraternity would not have the energy that it does and may not be as significant in society. It takes men of all types, personalities, and walks of life to fuel a force as influential and proactive as Beta Theta Pi.

One of the highlights of General Convention for me was Leadership College. Having attended a number of other leadership programs, I was expecting to do more ice-breakers and physical activities that allow attendees to use and develop leadership skills. However, Leadership College was a much more intellectually intriguing and personal experience and unique from my others. Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People was a motivating approach and a plan I intend to use now and in the future, in Beta and all aspects of my life. One particular thing I learned came from Covey’s emphasis on shifting paradigms. The way I view things and react to situations, which is all self-controlled, will determine the outcomes, my attitudes, my effectiveness, and the legacy I can leave at John Carroll University. I need to start viewing more situations as “win-win,” according to the habit of mutual benefit. When working in Beta, with other campus organizations, the administration, or even the school paper, I need to think win-win instead of win-lose so that everyone will benefit.

Most importantly, I’m beginning to learn what it means to be a Beta. During the keynote address at the closing banquet, I was hit by a brick wall—I am an active member of the greatest fraternity in the world! This is a privilege as well as a challenge, and I must do everything in my power to take full advantage of the bridge laid by those before me and to build up the bridge even more for my future brothers to follow.

Reflection by Nicholas P.J. We are on track to earn our coveted charter and become an official chapter of Beta Theta Pi in the summer of 2010 at the 171st General Convention in Washington, D.C. This means we will be working diligently in all areas of chapter operations throughout the year to leave no doubt that we will in fact walk away next August as a full chapter. This blog will provide some insights from various brothers as we continue through the process. Some will reflect on leadership development experiences they've attended, while others will provide updates on our chartering progress. New members will also have the opportunity to blog about the new member education program as they learn the history and lore of our Great and Good Fraternity on their path to initiation. Stay tuned as we further develop and integrate this blog into our communication with alumni, parents, potential new members, faculty, staff, and all friends of Beta.
